"According to research done in England, green spaces make students mentally healthier. Students study better and get better grades." So says Professor Youbin Zheng from UofG's School of Environmental Sciences when talking about one of the reasons he's excited about The Coop Commons green roof.
On top of all the all the other excellent reasons why living roofs make sense (reducing our carbon footprint, hosting pollinators, increasing energy efficiency, looking beautiful) it turns out that it just might give students living there an academic advantage.
Well, off course it will. How could living in a beautiful, new, modern, efficient and environmentally progressive building across the street from campus, not kick serious ass and be good for you too? An it's built by students, exclusively for students. The living roof design being incorporated into CCC's south side is a home-grown UofG invention. Zheng, along with Greg Yuristy have made green roof applications work on seriously steep pitches and they're excited about seeing their hard work show up on the Coop building made for students.
Yuristy and his team will be installing the innovative living roof design in May which in no time will be a gorgeous, colourful home to all sorts of pollinators and butterflies.
How cool is that?
