Volunteering at Hillside or checking out the Bookshelf

Guelph in the summertime: We art. We also eat.

Tom Klein Beernink May 30, 2014

by Emily Padhi, Board member and Co-op resident

Another Marvel superhero movie is in theatres. Indeed, the summer season truly sets in once a regurgitated comic book superhero makes its way to the cinema. The blockbuster flick proves time after time that a barrage of CGI-supported explosions, a scientifically implausible plot, and a generic hot guy is enough to sap your summer cash that would otherwise be better spent on a cold beer or a bikini wax.

Who else is experiencing a craving for creativity? Good news is: in Guelph, you don’t have to look far.

The city is a hub of creativity and there is something for everyone: weirdoes, normal – you name it.

Guelph is home to several great festivals for the young hearted, free-minded, and the hungry.

Guelph Dance Festival – May 29 - June 1, 2014

Guelph & District Multicultural Festival – June 6-8, 2014

Inner City Artist Series – June 14th, 2014 (8pm-12am; Bikram Yoga Guelph, 126 Woolwich St.)

Taste Real Guelph Wellington Local Food Fest – June 22, 2014

Festival Italiano – July 11-13, 2014

Hillside Festival – July 25-27, 2014

Guelph Fourth Friday’s – June 27, July 25, and August 22, 2014

No word on whether Pigfest, the anti-Ribfest food festival, is a go again this year, but if it is, it’s going to be super-cute. Last year it was held at the end of August.

 But wait, there’s more!

Guelph locals, Aaron Dale and Kelly Baker, have created a wicked website dedicated to making sure you know what’s going on in the Guelph music scene. Music Lives is the website and the Events tab has a full calendar detailing live acts performing throughout the summer in the city.

Finally, if you don’t already know, Guelph has a little well-known gem called The Bookshelf. It’s a bookstore, restaurant, pub, nightclub and cinema all rolled in to one. The bookstore contains a rich and varied collection of books, while the cinema shows a lot more than just the predictable mall movies.  You haven’t had the true Guelph experience until you’ve visited The Bookshelf. Check it out!
